The last impressive group of finalists for the 2014 Leader-Tynan Sportstar Awards are now in and the talent pool is red hot.

They join an impressive list of achievers from St George and Sutherland Shire.

In the SENIOR category, the rising star of world cricket, Sutherland batsman and stand-in Test captain Steve Smith, 25, became the first player from the club to captain Australia.

Smith stepped up to the plate when regular Test skipper Michael Clarke was injured and he showed his qualities leading the Australian team to victory in the four match series against India.

Smith took the game by storm in 2014 scoring 1146 runs at 81.85 at Test level, stamping himself as one of the rising batsmen of his generation.

He won the Allan Border Medal in recognition of his excellence at international level.

In the JUNIOR category, Deborah Greenbaum, 17, of Blakehurst, won consecutive national titles at the 2014 Australian Aerobic Gymnastics Championships and was named in the Gymnastics Australia national squad.

Sydney FC A-league star Alex Gerbasch, of Yowie Bay, is another young outstanding talent.

Alex, 17, made his debut for Sydney FC in October.

St George association netballer Kaitlyn Bryce, 19, who is the Netball NSW under-21 captain, was also named State League Player of the Year in 2014.

In the SENIOR TEAM category, St George Netball Association’s State League team won the first division women’s title. It was the first time St George achieved this milestone in the Netball NSW competition.

In the MASTERS category, Krys Macready, 51, of Oyster Bay, who won four gold and two silver medals at the 2014 rowing World Masters Championships in Ballarat.

Tennis player Leanne Swaysland, 54, of Taren Point, has been hitting winners all her life. She too is in the masters judging.

The Illawarra Suburbs Lawn Tennis Association member won an ITF world masters doubles title last year. She has won this title four times.

In the ATHLETES WITH A DISABILITY category, swimmer Nicole Miro, 14, has staked her claim, with a series of victories at major meets including six gold medals, two silver and one bronze at the 2014 school nationals.

Nicole, 14, is a Menai Swim Academy member.

In the LOCAL SPORTS CLUB category, Southern Power AFL Women’s Club second division team won their AFL Sydney competition undefeated. They were electrifying.

It was the first time the club had won the AFL Sydney women’s grand final, etching their name in the record books.

Sutherland Shire Football Association had several clubs that were dominant in various age competitions.

They were Gymea winning 12 competitions, Lilli Pilli winning eight, and the Miranda and Bosco clubs winning five each.

The Football NSW Champion of Champions titles were won by the association’s Como all-age team and Loftus won the over 30s women’s title.

Another prominent finalist is NSW Academy of Gymnastics, Miranda, run by Bill Parsons.

The club dominated the sport in boys, girls, men’s and women’s competitions in 2014 with a raft of wins at state, national and international level.

Two of their top gymnasts among many are Elise Baxter and Stephanie Magiros.

The club went to Singapore last year and won a swag of medals in men’s and women’s competitions.

The club won the women’s artistic gymnastics competition.

In the ALL SCHOOLS TEAMS category, Endeavour Sports High School’s rugby league team won the GIO Schoolboy Cup, the premier competition in NSW and Queensland.

Endeavour Sports defeated Patrician Brothers Blacktown, 22-12 in the grand final in September at Kogarah Oval.
